Summer Vibe Inspiration for your Family Photo Session

Ready to book your family photo session and nervous about co-ordinating all of your outfits?  Well don’t worry!  here is our what to wear guide for a summer vibe look for your family photo session.

Top tips for your family photo session

Remember, colour is a good thing!  When most people look at my photographs, the first thing they comment on is how colourful they are, the more colour your wear the more fun and vibrant your images tend to be.

Don’t forget, look at your home, where you want the images displayed and look at the colours you would like to fit in with your room, this will firstly help you decide your colour scheme (greens, reds, yellows, blue etc).  Here at Sarah Offley Photography I also put together a personalised colour chart for my clients to assist them with their family photo session co-ordination.

Try to think of everyone’s outfits combined as one big outfit. If you put all the pieces of clothing that all the members of your family will be wearing during our photo session in a big pile on your bed, you want the pile to be colourful and have some variety but still look fairly pleasing all together.

Don’t worry about your shoes, I tend to take informal images so you will be asked to sit on the floor, this style works best with no shoes.  However if you would like a more formal style, I would suggest bringing your clean shoes in a bag to get changed into when you are at the studio.

Finally there is nothing wrong with the white tops and jeans if you are looking for black & white images only, for this though I would advise you wear outfits with texture in them as this does add interest to the image.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:

NAILS

Ladies, please remember to paint your finger and toe nails (especially if choosing go go barefoot).

JEWELLERY

Remember that co-coordinating jewellery, scarves and hair accessories can look fantastic and can add a lot of style to your images

MAKEUP

Makeup just slightly stronger that you would wear for normal daytime.  Don’t wear makeup with sparkles (including high gloss lipstick) the sparkles catch the light of the flash and you will have silver sparkles all over!  Bring your make up bag for touch ups.

HAIR

Please don’t try any radical hair styles or colours just before your session, style your hair so it ‘looks like you’ don’t do any style you haven’t tried before!

FAKE TANS

These need to be done professionally as they need to be blended in properly, badly done fake tans show up really badly under the studio lighting.

CLOTHING

For ladies long- or 3/4-sleeve tops are very flattering.  If you iron, iron the night before and then hang the clothes for your shoot. If you’re wearing something that wrinkles easily, don’t wear it in the car on the way to the shoot – just change at the studio, creased clothing (especially collars) will show on your images.
A little planning before your session will pay dividends for the ‘feel’ and ‘look’ of your session.  I hope this guide will help you with your choices of clothing and colours for your family photo session.
